The Keurig Ant Challenge

So we love our Keurig and coffee pots that hold water for a quick cup of hot coffee.
As pest control technician I have found they are a magnet for ghost ants. Most of the time the customer is totally unaware there are ants floating around in the reservoir.
Once I started tracking difficult ant infestations to the water being held in the reservoir we were able to eliminate these pests.
After placing bait near the coffee pot I give the ants time to choose the bait and start returning to the nest. Important steps to follow are to rinse out the coffee pot and relocate for a few days.
Once the ant s are eliminated the customer can keep the reservoir filled with water and continue to enjoy the convenience of the Keurig.

  1. That is intense that the coffee pot was increasing the ant problem. People have to have their morning coffee. It's nice to hear that the coffee pot doesn't have to be permanently relocated. It would seem frustrating to have to hide the coffee pot between uses. That would be highly annoying.

  4. just thought I'd give you my observations and see what you think.

our building just got infested with pharoah ants

the very first place I found them was in the keurig..floating in the middle of the water..about ten of them.

over the course of the next couple months I have come to believe there is some kind of resonance when the keurig is plugged in even when in standby as...
when I moved it across the room it took the ants 2 days to find it and only it.

I put it on the stove and plugged it into the stovetop outlet and they found it.

always floating on the water huddled together in a little island

after the building got treated and I eventually put the keurig back to its original spot I didn't see any ants for 3 weeks and then one evening found about 10 in the water.. immediately cleaned and moved the keurig back to the stove and haven't seen an ant again for a week since.

we have since been plugging the keurig in to brew and unplugging it immediately.

they never go for the spot where the kcup goes..just straight for the water and then get stuck...so they are not going back to the nest with a trail to bring others.

we always remove the kcup immediately and always have and rarely use sweetened cups.

the kicker..this whole time..the keurigs usual spot is 10 inches away from a Brita jug they could just as easily climb into..especially when the keurig is absent..but I have never seen an ant on or in it.

  6. I've always had a Keurig, but my new one has a light under the water reservoir. I'm thinking that is what attracts the ants. I have a sink, dog dish, toilet .. many other places to get water .. yet several of them are getting stuck in the water. Never happened before this new Keurig.

I thought maybe they were attracted to the filter inside the water .. but realized it must be the light.

  14. I literally googled ants, roaches and bugs in my Keurig. Turns out bugs can go months with out food but will die without water. Pests go into Keurig's because of the water supply. Even when the tank is empty the inner reservoir holds water, they do not care if water is cold or hot. Place a ring of borax gel or borax acid around your coffee maker and it should stop! Also, if you are like me and too OCD for that since pest fecal matter in my coffee is beyond my mind I can't then I would suggest getting a sealed unit and not a Keurig. Seriously found that because Keurig isnt a sealed unit and because of the way its made it will cause bugs or be the issue for new ones! Keurig and bugs is the #1 searched item so that should tell you something!

    1. Apparently I’ve been drinking ants in my morning mocha for years! When I saw them for the first time a couple months ago I thought it was because I was leaving water in the reservoir, so I quickly bought a single cup Keurig thinking I had solved the problem. But I still find ants. What a turn off. I will try the borax solution. I wonder now if Starbucks and other places have the same unknown problem. Yikes.
